LW/24/0217 - Land south of Allington Road, Newick Additional documents: Minutes: Councillor Cathy Wickens spoke on behalf of Newick Parish Council. Brian Hodge (Local Resident), Tony Turk (Newick Village Society) and Patrick Cumberlege (Local Resident) spoke against the proposal. Andrew Black (Agent) spoke for the proposal. Councillor Charlotte Keenan spoke in her capacity as the Lewes District Ward Councillor.
Resolved:
That planning application LW/24/0217 for erection of 27 dwellings with access, roads, parking, open space, SuDs and associated infrastructure be refused for the following reasons:
The proposed development would result in the loss of open green countryside on the southwestern edge of Newick village outside of its formal planning boundary. It is an area that is fundamental to the design and character of the settlement and its village feel, and whilst boundary landscaping is proposed by the application, it would not, even over time, adequately compensate for the proposed loss of the intrinsic character.
Newick’s design character is a small tightly knit village, tightly bounded by countryside and also moves into the village to give it, its special character, a characteristic exhibited by the application site. Therefore, this loss of open green countryside would be contrary to LLP1, CP10, LLP2, DM25 and NPPF Paragraph 187 and Newick Neighbourhood Plan Paragraph ENV1.
